The USA participates in international negotiations regarding an agreement aimed at reducing plastic pollution. These negotiations are taking place in Geneva, where representatives from 184 countries and over 600 organizations are discussing the issue of reducing plastic pollution over a period of 10 days.
The USA's position in these negotiations is distinctly different from their previous stance in other international obligations, especially since during Donald Trump's presidency, the country withdrew from several agreements related to climate. However, as representatives of the State Department have stated, participation in the negotiations is critically important for protecting American interests.
According to the estimates of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in 2023, 22 million tons of plastic waste will enter the marine environment, and this figure could rise to 30 million tons by 2040 if measures are not taken.
The USA opposes the introduction of global restrictions on plastic production, as plastic is an important component for many economic sectors. They support improvements in waste management, product design, and recycling.
On the first day of the negotiations, the USA proposed to amend the formulation of the agreement regarding the entire life cycle of plastic, which could stop the interference with its production.
Industry leaders support the USA's position, while some ecologists consider it insufficiently strong to address the global problem of plastic pollution.
