At the beginning of February, 15-year-old Harvi Vilgus was on his way to school, but his life was cut short by a racially motivated attack. After the attack, which took place in front of other students, some of whom were involved in the incident.
Harvi suffered a fatal injury to the heart, and his family did not manage to reach the hospital in time, as he was pronounced dead at the scene. The student who stabbed Harvi admitted to manslaughter, but during the trial, he denied the intent to commit murder. The court found him guilty of manslaughter.
The Vilgus family, experiencing grief, decided not to remain silent. They are creating "Hub Harvi" - a youth program to discuss issues of racism with young people and provide alternatives. Harvi's mother, Karolina, noted that there is a need for more education about knife crime and support for students who experience difficulties in school.
The family turned to the Minister of Internal Affairs to find solutions for students who suffer from bullying and other problems. They are also advocating for the introduction of alternative educational programs for children who cannot attend traditional schools. According to them, not all children can be happy in the traditional school system.
Harvi's death became a catalyst for discussions about racism in schools and the urgent need for changes in the education system to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
