Increase in Deaths from Bacteria in the USA
- The increase in deaths from bacteria is being observed in several states in the USA.
- The primary risk is posed by individuals with weakened immune systems and the elderly.
- Experts recommend protecting wounds and seeking medical assistance.
This year, in the southeastern United States, there has been an increase in deaths from the bacteria Vibrio vulnificus. According to data, the highest number of cases was reported in Florida, four in Louisiana, and one in the southeastern Carolinas.
This bacteria thrive in warm seawater and can cause necrotizing fasciitis, a serious infection that quickly spreads through body tissues. In Florida, 16 cases have been confirmed this year, in Louisiana — 17, in the Southeastern Carolinas — 7, and in Mississippi — 3.
Bacteria can enter the body through open wounds that come into contact with contaminated water, or through the consumption of contaminated seafood, especially raw oysters. Approximately 20% of infections are caused by this bacteria.
Antarpriti Dzhutla, a professor of engineering at the University of Florida, noted that infections, although still rare, are experiencing an abnormal increase this year. He emphasized that such a number of cases was not observed at the beginning of summer in previous years.
One of the reasons for this increase may be high concentrations of plankton and chlorophyll in Florida, which can be associated with increased bacteria levels. It has also been noted that infections often increase after hurricanes, which can elevate bacteria levels in coastal waters.
Experts advise covering any open wounds before entering the water and seeking medical help if signs of infection appear. Current antibiotic treatments can help prevent serious complications.
