Legendary NFL player Billy Houghton dies at 95

Houston — Billy Houghton, a former star player of the "Green-Bay Packers," is considered one of the most productive rushers of the Super Bowl era, passing away at the age of 95. His death occurred in Houston on August 4, confirmed by the funeral service Bradshaw-Carter.

Houghton was born in Littlefield, Texas, in 1930. He was regarded as the oldest living NFL player.

In 1957, he recorded the first rushing touchdown of the Packers at the Lambeau Field stadium. Houghton was drafted in the second round of the Packers in 1952 and became the first rookie in the NFL to achieve 1000 yards rushing, recording 1231 yards in his debut season. He was twice named the league leader in rushing yards, four times featured on the "Pro Bowl" and three times received the title of "All-Pro."

Houghton set a franchise record for the "Green-Bay" with the most rushing yards in a game, gaining 257 yards in a match against the "Los Angeles Rams" in 1956. When he finished his career in 1963, he was the NFL leader in total rushing yards (503) and rushing attempts (8459). In 1974, he was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame.

After seven years with the "Green-Bay" Houghton was traded to the "Cleveland Browns" in 1959, and then to the "Dallas Cowboys" in 1960, where he ended his career under the guidance of coach Tom Landry.

Houghton was also awarded the title of "University Sportsman" in college at Rice and is a member of the Rice Hall of Fame.
