Atlanta — Two police officers from the metropolitan Atlanta area were injured during an attempt to arrest a man who was in need at the station. The incident occurred near the entrance to the Five Points station, which is an important transfer point for the train systems.

According to the words of the police chief M. Scott Kreher, the officers approached the man, but he refused to cooperate. During the arrest attempt, the man produced a firearm and fired at the officers, wounding one woman in the leg and a man in the arm.

The woman was treated and released from the hospital, but reported a loss of hearing due to proximity to the gunfire. The man officer underwent emergency surgery on Friday. Video cameras captured how the man fled onto the train and appeared at two stops to the south, discarding the firearm at the West End station. The police did not name his identity but indicated that they know who he is, and his search is being conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service. The firearm was recovered.

The Five Points station reopened early Friday when trains began to resume service.
