Instagram has launched a new map feature and how to protect your privacy

  • Instagram has introduced a new map feature for users
  • Users can control with whom to share their location
  • The location sharing feature is activated with a simple agreement

This was reported by TechCrunch, The Verge.

On August 8, 2025, Instagram introduced a new feature called "Instagram Map," which allows users to share their latest active location and find content based on the location of posts. Instagram head Adam Mosseri noted that users' locations are visible only to those with whom they choose to share them. By default, the location sharing feature is off, but many users express concerns regarding privacy.

Mosseri mentioned that some users may be unaware of the feature, as the map displays information about locations from recently public Stories or Reels. It is noted that when you activate this feature, your location updates only when the app is open or when it is running in the foreground.

To access Instagram Map, users need to go to their profile settings and tap on the new option "Map." Upon first use, a notification will appear about the new feature, clarifying that others will not be able to see your location unless you decide to share it.

To set parameters for location sharing, go to profile settings, select the option "Stories, live broadcasts, and location" and tap the button "Share location." Users can choose with whom to share their location: with friends, a list of close friends, or no one.

While the new feature has raised some concerns, Meta reassures that location sharing can only happen with explicit user consent. Many users also express concerns about potential risks associated with privacy, especially for victims of domestic abuse.

For those who wish to disable the location sharing feature, Instagram provides simple instructions that involve opening settings, navigating to the map, and selecting the "no one" parameter in the settings.
