Lukashenko confirms he is not planning a new term
- Lukashenko is not planning to run in the upcoming elections
- His son Mikhail will not be a candidate for that position
- Lukashenko's rule has lasted more than 30 years
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko stated that he has no intention of running in the upcoming elections. He dismissed the notion of a possible successor, emphasizing that his son, Mikhail, is not a candidate for that position.
In an interview with TIME, Lukashenko noted that he wants his successor to ensure stability in the country. He also stressed that changes should not lead to a "revolutionary break".
Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, said he was ready to leave the position during the last elections but changed his decision after demands from the public to remain. Despite this, international observers did not recognize the results of the elections due to numerous violations of human rights.
Lukashenko also pointed out that there are no political parties in Belarus, although human rights activists claim that many people are still under surveillance for political motives.
