Sonya Kartal from Great Britain suffered a defeat in the first round of the Cincinnati Open against Caroline Garcia. The 23-year-old tennis player lost with a score of 5-7, 6-4, 3-6. Garcia, who won the tournament in 2022, continues her battle against Karolyn Mukhovaya, who achieved her first victory since March 19.
The Kartal defeat was part of a disappointing performance by British tennis players, who also saw Katie Boulter and Jakeob Firnli lose in the first round. Boulter, 29 years old, lost to Serbian Olzi Danilovich (0-6, 5-7) and will now face Emma Raducanu, who recently became the new number one racket of Great Britain.
In addition, five-time champion Vimbldon Vinus Williams progressed to world number 42, Hessik Boazman Mayer, with a score of 4-6, 4-6.
