Washington (AP) — President Donald Trump has removed former Congressman Billy Long from the position of IRS commissioner less than two months after his confirmation. This was reported by a White House representative, who requested to remain anonymous.
The reasons for the dismissal have not been disclosed. During the search for a permanent replacement, the position has been temporarily filled by Finance Minister Scott Bessent.
Democrats have expressed concern regarding Long's previous activities, including his work for a company that promoted tax breaks during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Senate confirmed his appointment by a vote of 53-44, despite the concerns raised.
Billy Long, who served in Congress from 2011 to 2023, began his tenure by sponsoring a bill for IRS privatization. He has no experience working in tax administration.
