Court sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the murder of his ex-wife

  • James Cartright was convicted of murder and assault
  • Samantha Mikburn became a victim at her birthday
  • The court found Cartright guilty based on a single ruling

61-year-old James Cartright received a life sentence in the Guildford court for the assault and murder of his ex-wife Samantha Mikburn in a luxury hotel in Surrey last year.

Evidence presented in court showed that Cartright attacked Mikburn during the celebration of her 60th birthday, when she was planning to meet with friends. After the second course of the evening, the woman excused herself to the bathroom, and upon returning to the room, Cartright assaulted and killed her, using a blunt object. The following morning, he fled to the police station, claiming that he remembered nothing.

During the trial, witnesses described Mikburn as "an extraordinary mother" and a successful businesswoman who organized the celebration at the Pennyhill Park hotel. Judge Murrey, announcing the verdict, stated that Mikburn's family suffered a loss that "cannot be described in words." Cartright, who throughout the trial maintained his innocence, received a minimal sentence of 28 years imprisonment.
