Keely Farms Dairy in Florida Becomes a Source of Raw Milk Linked to Outbreaks
- Keely Farms Dairy has been identified as the source of an outbreak affecting 21 individuals.
- Since January 2025, 21 cases of illness have been reported.
- In Florida, the sale of raw milk for human consumption is prohibited.
The Florida Department of Health has identified Keely Farms Dairy, located in New Smyrna Beach, as the source of raw milk linked to the illness of 21 people from E. coli or Campylobacter since January. According to state data, as of January 24, six children under the age of 10 have been infected, and seven individuals have been hospitalized, including two with serious complications.
The Florida Department of Health indicated that they will continue to work with Keely Farms Dairy to ensure compliance with sanitary practices. They also warned Florida residents about the potential risks associated with consuming raw milk, but did not specify such recommendations as the state’s agricultural commissioner, who advised that only pasteurized dairy products should be consumed.
The popularity of raw milk is increasing, regardless of the reported risks associated with consuming unpasteurized products. Regulatory control over products and liquids and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consider raw milk to be one of the most dangerous products for consumption.
In Florida, the sale of raw milk for human consumption is prohibited, but retail sellers continue to sell it, marketing their products as such that are designated for animals. Recently, Keely Farms Dairy has actively promoted its products in a private Facebook group, where suppliers and Florida consumers coordinate purchases of raw milk. The farm's website states that the sale of raw milk for human consumption is prohibited by federal law, and consumers are advised not to discuss such usage.
