On September 8, 2025, in Washington, the presidents of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a peace agreement that aims to end the long-standing conflict between the two countries. The agreement was concluded under the mediation of US President Donald Trump.
Content of the Agreement
The agreement contains 17 provisions, which remain confidential for now. The main goal of the document is the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia through mutual recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity. It also foresees the development of economic cooperation.
An important element of the agreement is the establishment of a transit route through the Zangezur corridor, which connects the main territory of Azerbaijan with its exclave Nakhchivan. Both sides are obliged to refrain from international pretenses and to prohibit the deployment of military forces from third countries along the common border.
Context of the Conflict
The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been ongoing since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, when Nagorno-Karabakh came under the control of Baku and fell under the influence of Yerevan. In late 2023, Azerbaijan regained control over Nagorno-Karabakh, which led to a mass exodus of the Armenian population from the region.
Following this, Pashinyan officially recognized the territory of Azerbaijan, which includes Nagorno-Karabakh. The sides agreed to a ceasefire and began discussions on the possibility of a peace agreement.
US Involvement
President Trump emphasized the importance of the agreement, noting that it allows for the restoration of trade and diplomatic ties between the countries. He also spoke about signing bilateral agreements with both countries to expand cooperation in energy, trade, and technology, as well as on lifting restrictions on military cooperation with Azerbaijan.
The agreement provides exclusive rights for the USA to develop a strategic transit corridor through Southern Caucasus, which connects the main territory of Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan. Trump called this route "Trump's Route for International Peace and Prosperity."
