FAFSA Opens Preliminary Testing for Students

New York — The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2026-27 academic year has become available for limited testing for a select number of students as part of a beta-testing phase, the Department of Education reports.

The Department introduces two phases of beta testing before the full opening of the application for all in January. The FAFSA form will be available for a limited number of students and families, selected through participating partnerships with community organizations and schools.

“We are using this time for monitoring the limited number of FAFSA submissions to see if our systems are working as expected,” said the department in a statement on Monday.

In the fall, students will be able to apply to participate in the second phase of beta testing. Participation will be limited, so not everyone will be accepted, the Department of Education noted.

How Does FAFSA Work?

FAFSA is a free government application that collects financial information from students and their families to determine whether they qualify for federal financial aid to pay for college education.

The application sends the student's financial information to the educational institutions they are interested in. The amount of financial aid that a student receives depends on each specific institution.

This application is also used to determine eligibility for other federal student aid programs, such as work-study and loans, as well as state and school aid. Some private scholarships also require FAFSA information to determine whether a student has the right to a scholarship.

When Will FAFSA Be Available for 2026-2027?

The FAFSA form for 2026-27 will be available for everyone starting January 1. The deadline for submitting the FAFSA application is June 30, 2026.

How to Prepare to Complete FAFSA?

Students can start preparing to complete the FAFSA right now so that they can finish it as soon as it becomes available. The first step in the process is creating an account on studentaid.gov and gathering the necessary documents:

• driver's license number
• alien registration number if you are not a U.S. citizen
• federal tax returns, W-2s, and other income documents
• bank statements and investment documents
• documents about untaxed income
