Meteorite Discovered That Struck a House in Georgia

  • The meteorite that struck the house was older than Earth.
  • Fragments of the meteorite were found after the fall on June 26.
  • Researchers plan to name it the McDonald meteorite.

AFINS, Georgia — The meteorite that struck a house in Georgia has been found to be older than Earth itself. This cosmic object fell to Earth on June 26, and according to witnesses from several southern states, it was quite bright.

Planetary geologist Scott Harris from the University of Georgia analyzed 23 grams of meteorite fragments that were found after the object, which was larger than a fist, struck the house and left a dent in the basement. Harris noted that the meteorite formed 4.56 billion years ago, which is 20 million years older than Earth.

According to Harris, this meteorite originates from a group of asteroids in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter, which resulted from the breakup of a larger asteroid about 470 million years ago. Researchers from the University of Georgia and their colleagues from Arizona State University plan to submit their findings to the Meteoritical Society, proposing to name this cosmic object the McDonald meteorite, in honor of the city in Georgia where it fell.
