WASHINGTON (AP) — On Thursday evening, the White House announced an increase in the presence of federal law enforcement agencies in the capital to combat crime, primarily during the upcoming week. This was stated in a press release from President Donald Trump regarding the potential for greater control over the city.
Press Secretary of the White House Karine Jean-Pierre noted that Washington has long suffered from violent crime, and Trump issued an order to strengthen security measures. According to her words, "there will be no safe haven for violent criminals in Washington."
Trump emphasized that the situation in the city is unsafe, and hinted at the restoration of federal control. This requires the repeal of the 1973 Home Rule Act, which, according to Trump’s words, his lawyers are reviewing, but could face opposition.
The operation began early, with agents from various agencies, such as the Secret Service and FBI, being involved in the patrol. However, during the two-hour street check in Washington at 1:00 AM, there were not many federal agents present, aside from local police.
This action is a response to the attack on a member of the Department of Justice, who became a victim of a carjacking attempt. Two 15-year-olds were arrested, and federal agents continue to search for other suspects.
Regardless of the fact that the Trump administration has authority for deploying federal forces in Washington, full control over the city requires a declaration of emergency status, which, presumably, will be awarded in court.
At the same time, Mayor of Washington Muriel Bowser did not comment on these actions, although her administration claims that it has reduced the number of homicides and carjackings in the city.
