The Uvalde School Shooting Investigation is Approaching Completion

  • The publication of new records regarding the shooting in Uvalde is anticipated.
  • Seven victims demand accountability for the police's inadequate response.
  • Two officers will appear in court for their arraignment.

In Houston, a legal battle over the publication of audio and video recordings, as well as other documents related to the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, is nearing its conclusion. The Uvalde County and Consolidated Independent School District expect that the requested records will be available this week.

Media organizations, including the Associated Press, filed a lawsuit against the county and school in 2022, demanding the release of materials related to the mass shooting in which 19 children and two teachers were killed. In a July ruling, the Texas appeals court upheld a lower court's decision requiring the release of these records.

In September 2024, the Uvalde city already released its records, which included video and police radio recordings that showed an extraordinarily slow response from law enforcement. Nearly 400 officers waited over 70 minutes before entering the classroom where the victims were trapped.

What Records Will Be Released?

It is expected that the school district will publish police service records and 911 calls; journalistic evidence related to the shooting; video recordings from cameras installed in the school; student files related to the shooting; internal communications among district officials; and the results of a security review of the school.

There may also be released personal records and other documents related to Pete Arredondo, the former chief of the Uvalde school police, who was fired and indicted for his role in the police response.

The records the district is expected to release will include details about the incidents and 911 calls, dispatcher logs from the sheriff's office and radio transmissions, video recordings, journalistic ballots, and evidence, as well as details about the interactions of law enforcement with the shooter and his mother.

Notably, since this information has already been released.

Seven Victims Also Demanded the Obtaining of Information

Seven victims have long demanded accountability for the police's inadequate response. "There is nothing in these records that could have given us more than what we have already experienced. After the publication, questions will arise. Transparency will exist. Possibly, there will also be accountability. Accountability will come," - said Berlanda Arreola, the grandmother of 10-year-old victim Ameri Jo Garza, before the school board's vote on the approval of the publication of records on July 21.

What Legal Battle Remains Regarding the Publication of Records?

The Texas government continues to lead a separate legal process, filed by media organizations, regarding the publication of records from this agency, related to the shooting at the school. The administration asserts that the publication of these records may be "unreasonable," as it could expose law enforcement to liability, revealing information about their work, and this could complicate judicial processes regarding the case.

The judicial process regarding the records remains unresolved in the 15th appellate court of Texas.

Two Officers Will Face Court for Their Reaction

Two officers who responded to the incident are facing criminal charges. Arredondo and former school officer Adrian Gonzalez did not plead guilty to the various charges against them in the shooting of children and the endangerment of their safety. Their trial starts on January 20.
