South Korea Dismantles Border Loudspeakers of North Korean Propaganda
- South Korea has begun dismantling loudspeakers at the border.
- This occurred after similar actions by North Korea.
- President Yoon Suk-yeol initiated efforts to improve relations.
This was reported by ABC News, Asharq Al-Awsat.
On August 8, 2025, South Korea announced that its military confirmed that North Korea had begun dismantling its propaganda loudspeakers at the border. This happened after South Korea also started to remove its own loudspeakers, which were used to transmit anti-North Korean propaganda.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea, the dismantling of loudspeakers from the southern side of the border began on Saturday morning. The military did not specify how many loudspeakers were removed, but noted that they would continue to monitor the situation.
This step marks the first response from Pyongyang after President Yoon Suk-yeol of South Korea declared his intention in early 2025 and began efforts to restore dialogue with North Korea. In response to Yoon's initiative, North Korea halted its transmissions, which included distressing sounds, such as those of animals that frightened residents of the south.
However, Pyongyang officials have not confirmed the information about the dismantling of their loudspeakers, changes in the policy of Yoon Suk-yeol are seen as an attempt to improve relations between the two countries, which remain technically at war since the end of the Korean War in 1953.
The dismantling of loudspeakers is part of a broader trend aimed at reducing tensions, as both countries previously used propaganda campaigns to increase tensions during times of crisis.
