In Atlanta, not far from the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an incident involving a shooting occurred, resulting in the death of a police officer. The incident took place on September 8, 2025, when the shooter opened fire at the CDC buildings, causing panic among workers and residents of neighboring areas.
The police officer, 33-year-old David Rouse, who served in the DeKalb Police Department, was fatally injured while trying to stop the shooter. He was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to the injuries. Rouse leaves behind two children and a spouse, and is also awaiting the birth of a third child.
The shooter, who, according to reports, believed that his health had deteriorated due to the COVID-19 vaccine, was also found dead in a nearby CVS pharmacy located across from the CDC. Police did not clarify whether the officer was killed by police fire or self-inflicted.
CDC confirmed that at the time of the shooting in the offices there were no civilian casualties, however, traces of gunfire were found in the offices. The authorities announced the presence of a significant threat to the employees and residents of the area. CDC employees were asked to work remotely on Monday.
This incident has become a new challenge for the CDC, which has already faced significant scrutiny and funding issues in its operations. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens noted that CDC employees have endured difficult times throughout the past year.
