They Are Using Powers in the Conflict with the Red District of Texas
- Governor Greg Abbott and Senator John Cornyn are using their powers to pressure Democrats in the state.
- Absent Democrats have left the state to block new congressional districts.
- The conflict may spill into the Republican primaries in 2026.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Senator John Cornyn, who are competing in Republican primaries, are using their powers to pressure Democrats who have left the state to block new congressional districts. Paxton filed a lawsuit in the Texas Supreme Court demanding the reinstatement of 13 Democrats from office, asserting that their absences violate the legality of his actions.
Cornyn, in turn, reached out to the FBI requesting assistance in locating absent Democrats. However, it is unclear what the FBI agents can do, since the absent lawmakers have not violated federal laws.
Paxton also filed a lawsuit against former Congressman Beto O'Rourke, accusing him of financing Democrats who fled Texas. He demanded a ban on fundraising for the relocation of Democrat expenses.
The conflict between Democrats and Republicans in Texas may spill over into the results of the primaries in 2026. Paxton and Cornyn are trying to position themselves as the strongest candidates, but their superiors also reflect internal divisions in the Republican Party.
The Texas legislature may reconvene soon, and the Speaker of the House is urging representatives to return absent Democrats to the state.
