Russia Comments on the Agreement Between Armenia and Azerbaijan
- Russia has emphasized its role in regulating the conflict
- The agreement provides for the establishment of a transport corridor
- Increased involvement may complicate the situation in the region
This is reported by Ukrayinska Pravda, Asharq Al-Awsat.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its position regarding the recent agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which was signed with the participation of U.S. President Donald Trump. The agreement, reached on August 8, provides for the establishment of a transport corridor that connects Azerbaijan with its exclave Nakhchivan.
Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted that any remaining regulation of the conflict between Baku and Yerevan should take into account Moscow's stance. She also emphasized that Azerbaijan and Armenia do not seek external assistance in their negotiations.
Zakharova stated that the "optimal variant" for resolving the conflict should involve only the countries of the region and their neighbors, such as Russia, Iran, and Turkey, without the involvement of the U.S. She also highlighted the importance of trilateral agreements that remain relevant for all parties involved.
This agreement is an important step towards normalizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which have been in a state of conflict for over 30 years. In 2020 and 2023, Azerbaijan regained control over Nagorno-Karabakh as a result of military actions.
