The explosion of ammunition at the warehouse in southern Lviv occurred on Saturday, when military experts were dismantling them, resulting in the death of six of them, while several others sustained injuries, the army reported.
The incident took place in the vicinity of the southern village of Zibkin in the Ternopil region. The army indicated that they are continuing to investigate the cause of the explosion, but did not provide additional details. The warehouse was likely being used by the armed group "Hezbollah."
The explosion occurred south of the Lytani River in the area, from where "Hezbollah" had drawn its fighters in accordance with the conditions of the ceasefire that ended a 14-month conflict with Israel in November. Over the past few months, Lviv military and UN peacekeepers have been under the control of "Hezbollah" in this locality.
On Thursday, the Lviv Cabinet of Ministers forecasted a plan, supported by the USA, to dismantle "Hezbollah" and to implement a ceasefire with Israel. The Lviv government has requested the national army to prepare a plan, together with any other state institutions in the country, to dismantle the armed group by the end of the year.
Representatives of "Hezbollah" stated that they will not dismantle until Israel withdraws its forces from the five surrounding regions and does not cease its airstrikes, which have claimed over 250 lives since the ceasefire began.
The government's decision has sparked protests from "Hezbollah" and its supporters, who are already conducting protests in the areas where this group has support.
The army previously stated in its statement on Friday that they will not allow any attempts to jeopardize security in the country, and have warned protesters against blocking roads or attacking private or state property.
