De Gea spent 12 years at Manchester United, winning four Player of the Year awards during that time. He left the club in 2023 after a defeat in the FA Cup final and did not have a club, until he decided to join Fiorentina in 2024.

Speaking about his departure from United, De Gea noted that he does not have an image and accepts how things turned out. He emphasized that playing for United was one of the best periods of his life.

"This was a special day for me, I am very happy to return," said De Gea after the match. He also mentioned that during the year without a club he thought about a possible end to his career, but eventually felt ready to return to football.
