Agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan opens new opportunities
- Leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a peace agreement.
- The EU welcomed the agreement and urged for its swift signing.
- The agreement does not resolve the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.
September 9, 2025, Yerevan, Armenia — Leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan signed an agreement aimed at ending the long-standing conflict between the countries. The agreement was signed at the White House with the participation of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The document, which consists of 17 points, reaffirms mutual recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries. Among the main provisions is the opening of a new transit route connecting the mainland part of Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan, known as "Trump Route." This step underscores a change in geopolitical conditions in the region.
The European Union also welcomed the conclusion of negotiations and urged for the swift signing of the peace agreement. It was noted that this step is important for normalizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
However, despite the signing of the agreement, both countries continue to remain technically in a state of war, as the agreement does not resolve the disputed issues regarding Nagorno-Karabakh. In the summer of 2023, Azerbaijan regained control over most of the territory of the region after military actions that led to a massive exodus of ethnic Armenians.
In Armenia, there is a mixed attitude towards the agreement. Some residents express skepticism regarding its effectiveness, while others believe that economic benefits could be significant if new transport corridors are realized.
According to experts, to ensure lasting peace, it is important to implement measures for restoring trust and fairness, as the history of the conflict has left deep wounds on both sides.
