MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — J.J. McCarthy returned to the field for the Minnesota Vikings in the first preseason game against the Houston Texans on Saturday. The quarterback, who missed his entire debut season due to an ankle injury, had a brief but productive outing, finishing with a 48-yard touchdown pass to Will Reinhardt.

McCarthy completed 4 of 7 passes for 30 yards during a 13-play, 58-yard drive. He also ran 8 yards for the first down on the fourth down, which helped secure the drive.

This appearance came on the anniversary of his unfortunate debut in the Vikings when he sustained an injury after throwing 188 yards and two touchdowns. Last season, the Vikings finished the regular season with a record of 14-3, but progressed to the playoffs of the Los Angeles Rams.

Head coach Kevin O'Connell believes that McCarthy demonstrates his skills, making him one of the best quarterbacks in the league. During the preseason practices, O'Connell actively works with him, hoping that he can maintain his health and show progress in upcoming games.

McCarthy replaced on the field when the Vikings took to the field for their second series. The Texans opened the scoring with a touchdown pass from Davis Mills to Braxton Berrios.

O'Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah have invested all their resources in McCarthy's development, hoping he can take on the role of team leader in the new season.
