  • Former Prime Minister Succès Masra was sentenced to 20 years in prison for charges related to violence.
  • The verdict pertains to a conflict between farmers and herders in April.
  • Masra plans to appeal the court's decision.

Ex-Prime Minister of Chad, Succès Masra, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Saturday, September 9, 2025, by a criminal court in the country. This decision was made regarding charges related to the incitement of violence, linked to the uprising and participation in the killings. The charges pertain to a bloody conflict between herders and farmers that occurred in April of this year.

In addition to the prison term, Masra was also fined nearly 1.8 million dollars. Following the announcement of the verdict, he stated that his supporters would remain steadfast.

Masra and 67 of his associates, mostly from the ethnic group Ngambaye, are suspected of organizing and inciting conflict, which resulted in the deaths of 35 individuals, while six others were injured. The politician denies all charges and considers the judicial process politically motivated.

Succès Masra was Prime Minister for only a few months in 2024, after which he became a critic of President Mahamat Déby. Déby came to power after the death of his father, who ruled the country for 30 years. Masra also ran against the presidential elections this year, in which Déby won overwhelmingly.
