On September 9, 2025, the President of Brazil, Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva, had a telephone conversation with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, which lasted about 40 minutes. According to information from the Brazilian presidential palace, Putin shared details of his negotiations with the USA and the latest discussions regarding peace between Russia and Ukraine.
The leaders also discussed cooperation within the framework of the BRICS group and the current international political and economic situation. This meeting was part of the ongoing active dialogues of Putin with various foreign leaders in anticipation of his scheduled meeting with the President of the USA, Donald Trump, next week.
Prior to this conversation, Putin spoke with the leaders of China and India, as well as other presidents from Central Asia and Europe, to inform them about his contacts with the USA regarding the war in Ukraine.
Lula plans to discuss a joint response to Trump's tariffs with the leaders of BRICS countries, which also include South Africa. Trump recently imposed a 50% import tariff on Brazilian goods, which has strained relations between the USA and Brazil.
Putin and Lula reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen strategic partnerships and coordination within BRICS, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in addressing global issues.
