- Suzuki is recognized for his outstanding career and contribution to baseball.
Seattle (AP) — On Saturday, September 10, 2025, the Seattle Mariners held a ceremony during which they honored Ichiro Suzuki, retiring his number 51 at T-Mobile Park during a game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Suzuki, who became the first Japanese player to have his number retired in the major leagues, expressed gratitude: "I am very grateful to be here today, to receive this highest honor."
The ceremony took place after Suzuki was selected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He became only the third player in the history of the team to have his number retired. His number 51 will be joined by the numbers of legendary players Ken Griffey Jr. (24) and Edgar Martinez (11).
Throughout his MLB career, which lasted 19 years, Suzuki became a 10-time All-Star, a 10-time Gold Glove winner, and a two-time batting champion. He set the record for the most hits in a single season with 262 in 2004. In total, he amassed 4,367 hits, of which 3,089 were in MLB.
Before Suzuki, number 51 was worn by another legendary player of the team — Randy Johnson, who also received recognition for his achievements. In 2026, the team also plans to retire his number 51.
Suzuki, who returned to Seattle in 2018, continues to be a part of the team, working as a special assistant.
