Context:

- Earlier, it was reported that one of the conditions for the Trump-Putin meeting might be an agreement on the last negotiation with the Ukrainian leader.
- The U.S. President agreed to simplify this report, although he did not rule out the possibility of a trilateral meeting.
Meanwhile, in preparation for the meeting, the Kremlin has again raised the issue of Alaska, insisting on "historical ties" with the region. According to research by the Institute for the Study of War, Russian officials emphasize that Alaska is "American, born in Russia."
Putin's spokesman Yuri Ushakov pointed to Alaska as a venue for the meeting, close to two countries through the Bering Strait and shared economic interests in the Arctic.
The Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev also emphasized the "historical ties" between Alaska and the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as on military and economic presence in the region.
Earlier, Russia repeatedly stated the necessity for the U.S. to return Alaska. Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev stated in January 2024 that Russia could expect the return of Alaska "at any moment" in response to American sanctions.
In September, it became known that Trump’s advisor Vitkoff visited Moscow, where he discussed the possibilities of ending Russia's war against Ukraine. Trump informed Zelensky about this meeting, expressing hope that Russia is now more inclined to ceasefire.
American and Russian officials are working on a possible peace plan that includes a ceasefire. Trump is also considering the idea of territorial exchange between Russia and Ukraine.
