Wildfires in Southern Europe continue to destroy nature

  • Fires in the Vesuvio region have led to the closure of tourist routes.
  • In France, the largest fire in the last 50 years has been recorded.
  • Experts link the increase in the number of fires to global warming.

In Southern Europe, serious forest fires continue to rage, affecting numerous regions. In particular, in the Vesuvio mountains in Italy, near Naples, tourist routes have been closed due to a massive fire that originated from the slopes of the volcano. Firefighters, military personnel, and volunteers from across the country are participating in firefighting efforts, utilizing helicopters and drones for monitoring the situation.

The fire in Vesuvio, which started several days ago, has engulfed an area of about 3 km, destroying forests and causing significant harm to wildlife. Local authorities report that the situation remains critical, and the cause of the fire has not yet been established, though there are suspicions of arson.

Currently, in France, in the region of Od, firefighters are battling the largest forest fire in the last 50 years. The area engulfed by the fire is larger than the area of Paris. Although the fire has managed to be localized, it is still burning over an area of 16,000 hectares. One person has died, and several have been injured, including firefighters.

Temperatures in the region reach 40 degrees Celsius, which complicates the work of rescue services. Government representatives warn of further difficulties due to strong winds and drought. The French Prime Minister described the situation as a "catastrophe without precedent," linking it to global warming and drought.

Wildfire disasters are not limited to just Italy and France. In Greece, fires are also ongoing, which have led to the evacuation of residents and the destruction of significant areas of agricultural land and forests. Experts assert that such disasters are becoming increasingly widespread due to climate change, leading to longer wildfire seasons across Europe.
