Adidas Apologizes for Shoes Inspired by Mexico

Designer Uilly Chavarria apologized for the shoes created in collaboration with Adidas Originals, which sparked criticism for "cultural appropriation." The shoes, known as the Oaxaca Slip-On, were inspired by traditional leather sandals, known as huaraches, made by local artisans in Mexico.

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, also expressed her discontent with these shoes, stating that companies often exploit products and ideas of indigenous peoples without proper recognition. Chavarria stated that he feels very sorry that the shoes were inspired without close collaboration with the Oaxaca community.

He added that the intention was to honor the cultural heritage of Oaxaca, but the necessary level of collaboration with local communities was not achieved. In response to Adidas's criticism, he connected with representatives of Oaxaca to discuss "compensation" for those who suffered from the copying.

The design of the Oaxaca Slip-On drew attention due to its resemblance to traditional huaraches, which are an important part of the cultural heritage of the Zapotecs in Oaxaca. Local authorities called on Adidas to withdraw this shoe model and apologize publicly.

In a public letter, the governor of Oaxaca urged the company to respect cultural expressions that "provide identity to communities." He emphasized that "culture is not for sale; it should be respected."

Adidas stated that it values the cultural diversity of indigenous peoples in Mexico and is ready to discuss how to "repair the damage" done to indigenous communities.
