Trump and Putin plan to meet in Alaska to discuss Ukraine

  • The meeting between Trump and Putin is scheduled for September 15 in Alaska.
  • Zelensky emphasized the necessity of Ukraine's participation in the negotiations.
  • Russia demands the transfer of territories, which has led to severe restrictions from Ukraine.

On Friday, September 15, a meeting will take place between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine. This information was confirmed by Trump, stating that the meeting will occur in Alaska, which was once Russian territory.

Trump set a deadline of August 8 for Putin to agree to the cessation of hostilities; otherwise, Russia will face new sanctions from the U.S. However, negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, which took place this summer, did not yield any progress.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that any agreements that do not include Ukraine will not hold weight. He stressed that there will be no agreements on the transfer of territories that were seized by Russia, including Crimea.

Following the announcement of the meeting, Ukrainian officials activated diplomatic efforts to support their demands. Zelensky also stated that Ukraine is not ready to accept limitations on its military capabilities or withdraw from NATO and EU membership.

At the same time, Russia announced that it demands from Ukraine the transfer of several regions, as well as a reduction in the size and capabilities of its army. Trump expressed the view that a possible "exchange of territories" could be a way to achieve peace, but Zelensky categorically rejected this proposition.

During the meeting, Trump and Putin will discuss conditions under which hostilities could cease, but both sides will have different demands, complicating the negotiation process.

The meeting in Alaska has historical significance, as the U.S. acquired this territory from Russia in 1867. The details of the meeting have not yet been disclosed, but both sides consider it logical.
