On September 15, 2025, a summit will take place in the Alliance between the President of the USA Donald Trump and the President of Russia Vladimir Putin. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that this meeting will be an important test for Putin to verify his intention to end the war in Ukraine.
Rutte emphasized that together with the security guarantees, it is essential to recognize that Ukraine must determine its own future as a sovereign state. He also expressed hope that Trump supports this condition.
At the same time, Kayy Kallas, head of the EU diplomacy, noted that Russia is trying to lift US sanctions, hoping for peaceful negotiations. She believes that pressure from Trump could change the course of the war in Ukraine.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed the opinion that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should be present at the negotiations, as the issue of Ukraine's territory cannot be discussed without his participation.
The NATO Secretary General also confirmed that the supply of weapons to Ukraine will continue regardless of the results of the negotiations. He noted that Trump has already resumed the supply of lethal aid, which is financed by European countries and Canada.
According to Rutte, if Putin seriously intends to make peace, negotiations could continue after the summit. If not, the situation will remain unchanged.
