The official representative of the IAEA visits Iran for negotiations

  • The visit of the IAEA representative does not foresee inspections of nuclear facilities.
  • Iran has suspended cooperation with the agency following the strikes by the USA and Israel.
  • Discussions on a new format of cooperation are scheduled for September 11.

TEHRAN (AP) — The Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is visiting Iran to restore ties, reported Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araqchi this week. The visit is scheduled for Monday, but inspections of nuclear facilities will not take place.

This will be the first visit after 12 days of military actions between Israel and Iran in June, during which strikes were carried out on key nuclear facilities in Iran. On July 3, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi ordered the suspension of cooperation with the IAEA following the US and Israeli airstrikes on important nuclear facilities.

Araqchi noted that achieving a new agreement on cooperation is essential for restoring inspections. In the past, Iran has limited inspections as a tactic during negotiations with the West, and it remains unclear when negotiations between Tehran and Washington regarding the nuclear program will resume.

According to assessments by American intelligence agencies and the IAEA, Iran has been organizing a nuclear weapons program since 2003, although currently, the country enriches uranium to 60%, which is a technical step to the level necessary for creating nuclear weapons.

It is noted that in June, the USA dealt airstrikes on three main nuclear facilities in Iran, resulting in the deaths of nearly 1,100 people in Iran, including many military commanders and nuclear scientists.
