In New York, hundreds of people gathered to pay tribute to the memory of Aland Etien, an officer who was killed last month in an office building in Manhattan. He became a victim of a shooting when a gunman opened fire on July 28, aiming to create a hostage situation at the National Football League headquarters.
Etien, an immigrant from Haiti, arrived in the U.S. in 2017, hoping for a new life. During the memorial service held in Brooklyn, he was remembered as a devoted father and grandfather who fulfilled his duties while he was on duty when the attack occurred.
Etien's brother, Smith Etien, said that his brother is remembered as a hero. "Aland made the ultimate choice, choosing courage and fearlessness instead of fear. In his last moments, he aimed to protect others," he added.
Among the shooting victims was also a police officer from New York, an executive director of an investment company, and a worker from a real estate agency. The gunman also targeted one person, first aiming at himself.
Like Etien, the deceased officer of the NYPD, Didarul Islam, who worked at a private security facility that day, was also an immigrant, originally from Bangladesh.
The president of the Etien's union, Manny Pastrick, noted that his legacy reminds us of the immigrants who face great risks every day.
Officers from various precincts in New York held a memorial for Etien's memory last week.
