Shane van Gisbergen wins NASCAR in Watkins Glen
- Shane van Gisbergen secured his fourth win of the NASCAR season.
- The race on the track in Watkins Glen was a pivotal one ahead of the playoffs.
- Tai Gibb finished in 33rd place, remaining without a win.
In Watkins Glen, New York, Shane van Gisbergen continued his journey in NASCAR history, securing his fourth win of this season in the Cup Series. The driver from Trackhouse Racing became only the third driver to win four consecutive races on road courses, joining 2020 champion Chase Elliott and NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon.
Van Gisbergen started from the second position, after Ryan Blaney bypassed him in qualifying. He took the lead on the 25th lap with 90 laps to go and continued the race without any mistakes, making his last stop with 27 laps to finish. The victory was secured on the 74th lap, when he led the last 17 laps, finishing ahead of Christopher Bell by 11.116 seconds.
This win confirmed the correctness of Trackhouse Racing's decision to sign van Gisbergen to a multi-year contract, which was made last week.
For Tai Gibb, the race turned out to be another disappointment. He finished the race in 33rd place after colliding with John Hunter Nemechek. Gibb, who is the owner of the Joe Gibb's team, has yet to secure a win since transitioning to the Cup Series after winning the Xfinity Series championship in 2022.
The next Cup Series race will take place on Saturday, August 16, at Richmond Raceway, which is the only NASCAR event on this track this season.
