The incident took place in the village of Santa-Lucia, located in the province of Guayas, which is considered one of the most dangerous in the country.
According to police reports, seven of the victims died on the spot, while all eight were hospitalized. The assailants, armed with firearms, arrived on motorcycles and in two cars and opened fire near the "Napoles" club at 1:15 a.m. local time.
Among the deceased was the owner of the club, Jorge Urquizo, the brother of the mayor of Santa-Lucia. The police have not clarified the motive for the attack, but they opened a case with all possible versions. Approximately 800 shells were found at the scene of the incident.
