In Japan, on the southern island of Kyushu, as a result of heavy rain, landslides have occurred. These weather conditions have led to the injury of several individuals and arrests during the construction holiday period. There have been reports of several missing persons.
The rains, which began last week, have led to the disappearance of one person and the injury of four others in the prefecture of Kagoshima. Low atmospheric pressure in the region continues to bring rain to northern Kyushu.
The Japanese meteorological agency reported on September 11 the highest level of alert for the prefecture of Kumamoto. The agency, with the management of fire safety and emergency situations, issued recommendations regarding evacuation for tens of thousands of people in Kumamoto and six other prefectures.
Rescuers are conducting searches for missing persons. In Kumamoto, they are looking for three people. Seven of the three individuals were trapped under a landslide when their vehicle was swept away to the evacuation center. Two have been rescued, but the third person is still missing. There are also reports of missing people who fell into overflowing rivers.
Television reports have shown how muddy water carries uprooted trees, while residents are trying to cross through flooded streets. Heavy rain has caused flooding during the construction holiday period. Many trains that connect Kagoshima and Hakata, as well as local trains, have been suspended. Approximately 6,000 households in Kumamoto have been left without electricity.
