Residents of Victoria observed a meteor and heard a loud explosion

  • Residents of Victoria became witnesses to a meteor with a loud explosion.
  • Astronomers believe that the meteorites might have fallen to the ground.
  • Observations coincide with the meteor stream Perseids.

On the night of September 10, 2025, residents of the central part of Victoria became witnesses to a large meteor that brightly flew across the night sky. Many people described this phenomenon as a very bright fireball, which was accompanied by a loud sound.

Among the eyewitnesses was Saskia Reis-Smith from Freystown, who reported that the meteor flew "directly above her head." She noted that the object looked very close and was clearly visible in its bright colors.

Terrence Dale from Eyldona also saw the meteor at 19:35. He described it as "long, blackish-red" and noted that the object seemed to be close to the mountainous mass.

Astronomer-professor Johnthony Horner from the University of Queensland confirmed that it indeed was a meteor. He explained that such brightness indicates that the meteor is "a fireball." He also added that, possibly, the meteorites could reach the ground, although so far nothing has been found.

After the meteor was observed, at 19:40, many residents reported a powerful explosion, which, according to the words of the Australian monitoring agency, resembled a sonic boom. However, specialists ruled out the possibility of seismic activity at that time.

Experts believe that it is likely that parts of the meteor might have fallen between the towns of Bendigo and Ballarat. According to the words of associated professor Mikhail Braun from Monash University, the sound of the explosion indicates that a large chunk of the meteor was likely close to the ground.

This meteor was observed during the meteor stream Perseids, which is considered one of the brightest of the year. However, astronomers ruled out the possibility that this meteor was part of Perseids.
