North Korea Warns of Possible Actions Against Joint Exercises
- North Korea has discussed joint exercises with South Korea and the USA.
- The planned exercises will begin on August 18, but some parts will be postponed.
- There are signs of reduced tension between the Koreas.
This was reported by The Yomiuri Shimbun, Asharq Al-Awsat.
North Korea expressed protest against the joint military exercises of South Korea and the USA, which are scheduled for August 18. The Minister of Defense of North Korea, No Kwan-chol, called these exercises "a blatant military provocation" and warned of possible counteractions. He stated that the military of North Korea must have an "absolute mission" to protect national security.
He emphasized that the exercises conducted under the auspices of the US military are evidence of the confrontational intentions of South Korea and the USA, which lead to an increase in the military threat and destabilization of regional security. North Korea regularly criticizes the military exercises of the allies, considering them a rehearsal for nuclear war.
Despite this, South Korea and the USA reported that a significant part of the planned exercises will be postponed to next month due to weather conditions, which is observed as an attempt by the new president of South Korea, Lee Jae-myung, to reduce tensions with Pyongyang.
The situation between the two Koreas remains tense, considering that North Korea continues to develop its nuclear capabilities. However, recently there have been positive changes, such as the demonstration by North Korean military units on the border, which was conducted after South Korea also began a similar demonstration of equipment.
Currently, North Korea shows a more restrained tone in criticism of the joint exercises of the USA and South Korea, focusing on expressing its position, rather than military threats.
