Scientists have discovered that the meteor from Georgia is older than Earth
- The age of the meteorite is estimated to be 4.56 billion years.
- The meteorite fell on the roof of a building in Georgia in June 2025.
- This meteorite is the 27th in the history of the state of Georgia.
The meteorite that fell on the roof of a building in the vicinity of Henry, Georgia, in June 2025, is now recognized as older than Earth. Research has shown that its age is estimated at 4.56 billion years, which is 20 million years older than our planet.
A researcher from Georgia University, Scott Harris, reported that he received 23 grams of meteorite fragments for analysis. The fragments of the meteorite, known as the Macdonald meteorite, were examined under a microscope, confirming their ancient age.
The meteorite belongs to the group of asteroids in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Harris noted that this meteorite was formed as a result of the breakup of a large asteroid approximately 470 million years ago. He also emphasized the importance of analyzing such cosmic objects for understanding potential threats from larger asteroids in the future.
The incident occurred on June 26, when the meteorite, having passed through the atmosphere, struck a roof, leaving fragments on the ground. A resident of the building reported that they still find pieces of cosmic dust in their yard.
This meteorite is the 27th to be discovered in the history of Georgia, and the sixth, the fall of which was recorded by cameras. Georgia University plans to submit the results of the research to the Committee for the nomenclature of the Meteoritical Society for official recognition of its name.
