Tribute to Diogo Jota during the Community Shield
- The group of fans interrupted a moment of silence in honor of Jota
- The head coach of Liverpool considers the actions of the fans to be unacceptable
- The team captain expressed disappointment over the incident
This is reported by ESPN, L'Équipe.
During the Community Shield match, which took place on August 6, 2025, at Wembley Stadium, a tribute was paid to the late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andrei Silvi, who perished in a car accident on July 3. Before the start of the match, a moment of silence was scheduled, but it was disrupted by a group of fans from Crystal Palace, which caused outrage among the attendees.
Liverpool's head coach Arne Slot stated that he does not consider the actions of the fans to be acceptable. He suggested that they might not have been aware of the moment of silence, especially since one of the attendees was simply eager to support his team. "They were trying to distract this fan, but it just created noise," Slot said.
Liverpool's captain Virgil van Dijk also expressed his dissatisfaction with the interruption of the moment of silence. He noted that it was disappointing to hear such sounds during a tribute to the memory of the deceased.
Most of the 82,645 spectators at the stadium maintained the moment of silence, while Liverpool fans sang the song "You'll Never Walk Alone" in honor of Jota and Silvi during the ceremony.
