Indian Court Orders the Removal of Stray Dogs from the Streets of Delhi

  • The court ordered the removal of 5,000 stray dogs in New Delhi.
  • A hotline will be established to report dog bite incidents.
  • Activists express concerns about the feasibility of the measures.

New Delhi (AP) — The Supreme Court of India has instructed the authorities in the capital to begin the process of removing stray dogs from the streets. According to the court's ruling, all dogs must be sterilized and relocated to shelters. Along with the directive, the government is required to capture 5,000 dogs from "high-risk zones" within six to eight weeks.

The number of stray dogs in New Delhi is estimated to range from 500,000 to over a million. The court stated that the aim of this ruling is to control the increasing incidents of dog bites, as the capital records nearly 2,000 such cases every day.

The court also instructed the establishment of a hotline for reporting dog bite incidents. The government is required to ensure that captured dogs do not return to the streets or residential areas.

Some animal rights activists have expressed concerns about the feasibility of this ruling, arguing that the measures outlined are unrealistic. In response, the court noted that the priority is the health of children.

The Minister of the Delhi Cabinet, Kapil Mishra, stated that the government has begun the process of removing stray dogs, emphasizing that this step is crucial to reducing the risk of rabies transmission.
