Spain emphasizes Ukraine's participation in the negotiations

  • Spain emphasizes Ukraine's participation in the negotiations
  • A meeting between Trump and Putin will take place on August 11
  • Albares stresses the importance of Ukraine's sovereignty

This is reported by Interfax Ukraine, Ukrayinska Pravda.

The Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, emphasized the importance of Ukraine's participation in all negotiations regarding its future. He stated that "nothing should be decided regarding the territory of Ukraine without the Ukrainian government."

Albares' comments came ahead of a meeting between the presidents of the USA and Russia, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, which will take place on August 11 in Almaty. The minister believes that the possibility of "talking about peace" with Putin is positive, but he emphasizes that it must be a "real peace," and not just further violations of Ukraine's sovereignty or European security.

He also noted that if a war agreement is reached, it would be born out of Russia's weakness; the world will be much more unstable; at some point, they may try to seize part of the territory of their weaker neighbor.

Earlier, the European Commission ruled that the US president should not negotiate on "one-sided" territorial exchange of Ukraine during peace negotiations with Russia.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed the view that a future agreement may indicate the actual recognition of Russia's control over parts of Ukraine.
