Texas Continues to Attempt to Redistrict Following Democrats' Exit
- Texas Republicans are trying to gather lawmakers for a vote on redistricting
- Democrats threaten to respond with changes in other states
- California plans a referendum on creating new districts
Texas Republicans are once again attempting to summon the legislative assembly to meet on Monday for a vote to redistrict Congress. This process has already triggered a national political showdown, as Democrats have left the state to prevent Republicans from obtaining the necessary number of votes.
The Republican majority intends to change five districts to help representatives of the United States under the leadership of President Donald Trump, in order to avoid repeating the results of the 2018 elections, which led to the establishment of a new Democratic majority.
Democrats from California, New York, and Illinois threaten to respond to Texas' actions with their own proposals regarding redistricting, which could lead to significant changes between districts, which usually are only reviewed once a decade.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated that he would again summon lawmakers to the Capitol until the number of Democrats returning for voting is sufficient. In response to this, Democratic leaders in other states plan their actions regarding redistricting, should Abbott achieve success.
Democrats who have remained in Texas face pressure to return, as their absence results in penalties. Abbott also plans to ask the court to declare certain positions vacant due to the absence of Democrats. However, Democrats may remain absent if their actions are aimed at delaying the Republicans' plans.
California plans to hold a referendum in November for the creation of new districts, which could lead to the establishment of five new Democratic districts. Proposals for the district map of California will be presented this week.
