- The EU is preparing a statement to support the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
- Negotiations between Trump and Putin may touch upon the situation.
- The statement emphasizes the importance of Ukraine's participation in peace negotiations.
Leaders of the European Union are preparing a joint statement that reaffirms support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine. This is happening in the context of preparations for a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which will take place in Alaska.
The statement will contain seven points and will be discussed among EU member states ahead of an online meeting of foreign ministers scheduled for September 11. Its aim is to reaffirm the importance of Ukraine's participation in any negotiations regarding its future.
The document notes that EU leaders "welcome President Trump's willingness" to finalize negotiations regarding Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Moreover, peace must be based on international law, including the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In addition, EU leaders emphasize that the path to peace in Ukraine cannot be determined without Ukraine's participation. Earlier, during a meeting with Trump, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for the introduction of additional economic sanctions against Moscow.
Currently, there is some uncertainty regarding whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will be present at the negotiations in Alaska, as not all EU countries are ready to support a unified position.
EU diplomats expressed concern about the information regarding possible territorial compromises that were discussed during the meeting with the U.S. representative with Putin. They believe that any decision must take into account Ukraine's interests.
