Monse Tome Resigns as Head Coach of the Spanish Women's National Team

The Spanish women's national football team has parted ways with head coach Monse Tome. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced that Tome's contract, which was set to expire in September, will not be extended.

This decision was made during the RFEF board meeting on September 11, 2025, just 15 days after the Euro 2025 final, where Spain reached England in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regular time and extra time.

The RFEF statement reads: "The Royal Spanish Football Federation thanks Monse Tome for her work, professionalism, and dedication during her time in various roles in the national teams." Tome became the first woman to hold the position of head coach following the resignation of Jorge Vilda.

Tome, who took over the role in September 2023, previously served as Vilda's assistant and helped the team win the UEFA Women's Euro 2024, defeating France in the final. In her first match in charge, she did not call up national team bomber Jenni Hermoso, but later reinstated her to the squad for the Nations League.

Next, Tome will be succeeded by Sonia Bermudez, who was previously the team's coach until the age of 23. Bermudez, 40, is a former international footballer for Spain and has experience working with youth teams.

Under Tome's leadership, Spain returned to the top spot in the FIFA women's ranking after their success in the Nations League.
