Ford announced an investment of $2 billion to transform its Louisville plant into a manufacturer of new affordable electric vehicles (EVs), starting with a mid-size pickup with a base price of $30,000, which is planned to launch in 2027.
This is not an ordinary factory upgrade. Ford is moving away from the classic conveyor system, implemented by Henry Ford more than 112 years ago, to reduce production costs. The system change, which allows for the production of affordable electric vehicles faster and with lower expenses, reflects the company's desire to compete with Chinese manufacturers.
A special team of nearly 500 people, working in California, has developed a new manufacturing system and platform for electric vehicles. The new "universal manufacturing system" involves transforming a single conveyor line into a three-dimensional assembly system. Ford has also developed a universal platform for electric vehicles, which utilizes lithium-ion batteries.
The platform is designed to use fewer parts, which will allow for reduced production costs. It is estimated that the new electric vehicles will require 20% fewer parts and will be produced 15% faster than traditional vehicles.
It is planned that the new pickup based on the new platform will provide more space for passengers and will also have improved driving dynamics. Production of the new pickup will start in 2027, and the factory will reduce the number of employees from 2,800 to 2,200 through automation processes.
Ford is also collaborating with the United Auto Workers union to ensure a smooth transition to the new manufacturing system, implementing programs to help workers who may leave the company.
