On August 8, 2025, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a peace agreement, which was mediated by the USA. The agreement confirms that both parties recognize and respect each other's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence.
Important points of the agreement include the rejection of territorial claims. The parties commit not to use force or threaten force regarding the territorial integrity of one another.
The agreement also stipulates that both countries will not station military forces from third countries on their territories. Armenia and Azerbaijan will establish a bilateral commission to monitor the implementation of the agreement.
The agreement will come into effect after the exchange of notifications about the completion of internal procedures, as provided by national legislation of both countries.
The conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia has lasted more than 30 years. In 2020 and 2023, Azerbaijan regained control over Nagorno-Karabakh, which led to a mass emigration of the Armenian population.
