Tropical Storm Erin Forms Strong Hurricane in the Atlantic

  • Tropical Storm Erin has formed in the eastern part of Cabo-Verde.
  • The storm could become a hurricane soon.
  • The temperature of ocean water encourages storm activity.

Tropical Storm Erin formed on Monday, September 11, 2025, in the eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean, east of the Cabo-Verde islands. According to the National Hurricane Center of the USA, the storm has a maximum wind speed of 45 miles per hour (72 km/h) and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane in the coming days.

Erin is the fifth named storm of the Atlantic season in 2025. The storm is moving to the west through an area known as "the main development region," which encompasses parts of the Atlantic from the western coast of Africa to the Caribbean Sea. This zone is where many tropical systems draw energy from warm ocean water.

It is expected that by evening, Erin could become a hurricane. However, it is still difficult to assess how much of a threat it could pose to the Caribbean basin, Bermuda, or the United States when it reaches the western Atlantic.

The surface temperature of the ocean in this zone is above normal, which ensures additional fueling for Erin. Typically, the most active period for hurricanes lasts from mid-September to mid-October, and meteorologists expect that this year will see higher activity than usual for tropical storms.

At this moment in 2025, four named tropical storms have already been recorded, but no hurricane has formed by September 11. Last year on the same date, there were already two hurricanes.
