Trade tariffs between the USA and China may increase
- The expiration of the trade pause on increased tariffs will end on September 12.
- Trump may raise tariffs on Chinese goods up to 245%.
- The economic uncertainty is affecting global markets.
The expiration of the trade pause between the USA and China is approaching, which could lead to an escalation of economic tensions between these two countries. The 90-day moratorium on increasing tariffs, which was achieved last month, is set to end, and it is unclear whether it will be extended.
Chinese officials have expressed hope that the United States will work with China to achieve an important consensus. According to the remarks of the spokesperson of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Zexuan, "we are hopeful that the USA will work with China to achieve an important consensus."
At a meeting in Stockholm last month, Chinese and American officials expressed hope for the extension of the pause. However, President Donald Trump has not yet confirmed this decision. He stated on social media that "tariffs are making our country strong and rich."
In the event of failure to achieve an agreement, Trump threatens to raise tariffs on Chinese goods by up to 245%. China also threatens to respond with tariffs of 125%, which could lead to a trade war.
Today's imports from China are subject to a base tariff of 10% and an additional tariff of 20% due to the issue of fentanyl contraband. Experts believe that raising tariffs will lead to an increase in prices in the USA, while consumers have already borne nearly 22% of costs from tariffs since January 2025.
In conditions of uncertainty, companies have stated they are in a state of "waiting," which may negatively impact global markets and the economic situation of both countries.
